Important Information for Hawaii County Elections

  • All Hawaii County races are non-partisan. Candidates may belong to a party but may not run under a party.

  • Each voter can only vote for a candidate in their Council district.

  • Only if there is more than one candidate from the same party in the same race, is there a primary vote on August 9th.

All (9) Hawaii County Council districts are up for election this year and every two years.

Only (5) Council districts DO HAVE Primary Elections voting on August 9th:

Council Districts II (2), IV (4), V (5), VI (6) and IX (9)

  • The top two (2) Primary vote winners in each district will advance to the General Election on November 4th.

  • If a Primary candidate wins 50% + one (1) of their race's vote in the Primaries, they have won the seat.

(2) districts that do NOT have primaries and will go straight to the General Election:

Council Districts I (1) and VIII (8)

(2) Seats for Hawaiii Council are uncontested:
