Dustin Barca
Notable Quotes:

Background (from candidate website) “I was so lucky to grow up on Kauaʻi, learning from my elders about our sacred and unique ʻaina (land, “that which feeds us.”) When I returned home from a traveling surf career, I started becoming aware of the issues our island is facing, and how they are compromising the health of our community and land. It’s time to move in a different direction, we can’t let things continue as they are.” Dustin Barca is a professional surfer, environmental activist, MMA fighter, father and Kaua’i Boy who attended Hanalei School and Kapaʻa High School. While this is Barca’s first bid at political office he has been involved in local politics for much of his young adult life. Driven by a strong sense of kuleana (responsibility and privilege) to Kauaʻi and its people, he sees local government as a way to deepen his service. Barca ran and paddled around the entire island for his Mayoral candidate race.
"The Hawaii water code is very clear. Hawaii's water belongs to the public trust and the people of Hawaii. Its first priority is for kalo and local food production.
The second priority is public enjoyment and a healthy water shed."
"Transparency and community involvement are the only way to run a pure government."
"I look at our island like an elevator, you know, and right now, we're at capacity — we're over capacity. So, we really need to put transportation and traffic into perspective
because it's one of the biggest issues on Kauai."

Kauai County Mayor

Debralynn "Mzdebz" Desilva-Carveiro
Background (from various) Hanapepe resident and owner of home-based “adult novelty items” business. Previously ran unsuccessfully for a Kauai County Council seat in 2010, receiving 925 of the 36,402 votes. "I grew up in the meanest part of Oahu, been in all sorts of trouble, and realized that if you want something to change, you as a person has to make that change first. I believe everyone is entitled to a second chance in life, regardless what it may be. You have to want to take it and apply it to working towards being a better person. As the saying goes, dont judge others unless you have walked in their shoes, but on the other hand, if you were given that chance, would you have made the same choices again. I have walked, i have learned, and have seen things no one should have to remember, but if I didnt I would not be the person i am today."
Notable Quote:
“You learn a lot more things on the street than you would learn in a classroom.”
“At the end of the day, I don’t like to play politics. I hate the notion of it’s who you know that gets you ahead in life. Basically, everybody should be judged by their own character and what they bring to the table.”
"I am a wife, mother, grandma, daughter, friend, aunty, cousin, sister, a shoulder to cry on.
Thats what makes me, ME."
